Smallidge, Peter J

State Exten Forester
My overall professional goal is to integrate extension and research in support of productive and healthy forest ecosystems in New York and the Northeast. The goal of my research is to develop and assess forest vegetation management strategies that facilitate sustainable, productive, and diverse forests. This goal is consistent with my Extension responsibility for addressing issues that affect private forestland management. Private forestlands represent 85% of the state’s forests and cover approximately 45% of NY. Research and extension, together with goals of the Arnot Forest, focus on issues of: forest management impacts on landscape quality, forest regeneration and its limitations imposed through high-grading, and healthy and productive sugarbushes.

research

research and scholarship focus

My research focuses on management strategies for (i) forest regeneration and (ii) conservation and productivity in hardwood forests and sugarbushes. Current research projects include: human dimensions of non-participatory forest owners, flame weeding to control woody interfering vegetation, and effects of slash on hardwood seedling development.

outreach focus

My extension programs focus primarily on private forest landowners, maple producers, and interrelated audiences such as professional foresters and the forest industry. I lead the state forestry extension program. Our primary focus is on supporting county forestry extension programs and developing new methods of reaching forest owners who don`t currently utilize Cornell Cooperative Extension materials.
