impact statement issue
The need is for quick, easy access to authoritative information on North America's breeding birds. There are two to three million bird watchers in the United States and thousands of wildlife managers who work with birds. We provide key information for all those people.

We developed Birds of North America Online (http://bna.birds.cornell.edu/bna/) which provides comprehensive life histories for each of the 716+ species of birds breeding in the USA (including Hawaii) and Canada.
impact statement summary
The Birds of North America series, which I edit, provides detailed information on ecology and biology of North America's birds to a wide audience. Currently at Cornell, I have joined a team that has pioneered ways to harness the power of the Internet to expand the classroom and develop new ways of integrating and presenting such scientific information. We are helping to change the ways that scholarly resources are kept alive and delivered.
