Golden Rice acceptability in developing countries CALS Impact Statement uri icon

description

  • Abstract

The goal of this ongoing project is to accelerate the acceptance and use of golden rice in Asia through a socio-economic impact analysis and appropriate management of intellectual property to facilitate the technology transfer process.

    Issue

Many rural and poor urban areas in Asia lack a supply of nutritional foods that provide a source for vitamin A. As a result, women and children in these areas suffer various consequences of vitamin A deficiency.

    Response

Golden rice is a genetically modified rice that contains pro-vitamin A. The product needs to overcome public acceptance barriers and go through a series of regulatory clearances before it can be widely used. We are in the process of compiling socio-economic impact information that will provide critical input for regulators as they evaluate the potential benefits of golden rice.

    Impact

The project is a 3 year ongoing effort.
