James Cutting received his BA from UNC - Chapel Hill and his PhD from Yale University. He taught at Yale, and then Wesleyan University before coming to Cornell in 1980. He has published over 100 scientific papers on various aspects of perception, including many on how we perceive depth, motion, and pictures. The latter have been coupled with long term interest in high and popular culture. His current interests are in structure of popular film and how it conforms to the “shape” of the human mind.
