The Department of English embraces new approaches to literary study while maintaining traditional strengths in creative writing and in teaching canonical literature in English from different historical periods and cultural locations, from medieval romance to postcolonial fiction. Ongoing debates about the role of critical theory, ethnic studies, gender and sexuality, popular culture, film and visual studies or the definition of the words "English" and "literature" themselves, have led to new understandings of the discipline. The department seeks to foster critical analysis and lucid writing and to teach both its graduate and undergraduate students about the nature of language and the rigors and pleasures of close reading.

The professors of English include scholars, critics, poets and novelists. In addition to having access to a world-class library system, students can participate in many interdisciplinary opportunities on campus.
