My professional interests focus on improving agribusiness firms marketing and management skills that lead to improved decision making, firm performance, and industry viability. Research determining the effect of firm, spatial, and market factors on firm and industry performance provides critical information for improving firm marketing and management decisions, identifying sources of competitive advantage (firm specific or regional), and forming effective policies targeted toward agri-based industry development. Educating public policy and economic development stakeholders about existing market conditions and structures, and the limiting factors that can influence economic development is emphasized. Extension programming and outreach efforts serve to disseminate applied research results through industry education and improve the understanding and linkages between agribusiness firm development and the public policies that address or impact it.

Teaching
teaching overview
- Teaching is not part of my current effort allocation and a formal teaching appointment will not likely be considered until post-tenure. However, I was involved with the instruction of AEM329, the International Agribusiness Study Trip, as a partner instructor to Poland in 2007 (Spring 2007, enrollment 19). The purpose of the course is to provide students interested in agribusiness management exposure to the concepts and managerial practices essential to the success of agribusiness and food companies in the global marketplace. With my extension and research interests, my involvement here is useful professionally by providing me with broader international insights into agribusiness management and development issues, as well as in mentoring students in global agribusiness. With no formal teaching allocation, my role was largely supportive to Loren Tauer, the other partner instructor, who took the lead in planning and development activities. I assisted in planning efforts, student interviews, and student participation while in Poland. I also assisted with grading student presentations before the trip aimed at familiarizing students with cultural, agricultural, and economic aspects of the host country, and in grading term papers following the trip wherein they articulated and integrated lessons observed on the field study. I believe an important element in agribusiness education is in making substantive connections between classroom concepts and business/industry applications. Study trips such as this provide opportunities to better understand and get a feel for complex agribusiness operations and managerial decision processes, which, in turn, can be compared with principles and applications in the classroom. In the next three to five years, I expect my involvement with AEM329 to remain in its current position, with general course leadership provided by an existing, tenured faculty member. Continued participation in this course should significantly improve my extensional programming activities and interaction with stakeholders by broadening my exposure to global agribusiness activity and the issues that domestic agribusinesses currently face in today’s global marketplace.

outreach overview
- I conduct extension programming in the areas of agricultural cooperatives, agricultural marketing, and agribusiness development. Extension programming is conducted in a way that integrates problem-solving research with extension and outreach programming. My developing program in Agribusiness and Economic Development serves to encourage the growth, competitiveness, and viability of agribusiness firms by improving the understanding and application of agricultural marketing, business management, and industry development skills. While particularly focused on New York State, the program is expected to have national and international relevance, serving to promote the understanding, linkages, and inter-relationships between agribusiness firm performance market structure, and agriculture-based industry development. The goals of the program are: 1. Provide innovative information and training opportunities to agribusiness firms to promote expanded market access of firm products and improved financial performance. 2. Increase coordination among agribusiness firms, highlighting the system-wide interrelationships. 3. Increase understanding of the economic contributions of the agricultural industry, identifying and addressing opportunities for and barriers to agriculture-based development. 4. Educate public policy and economic development stakeholders on strategies to improve the competitiveness of agribusiness in New York State. The nature of my appointment in agribusiness is necessarily broad in context and in the range of stakeholders that I interact with. As such, priority audiences have been identified to provide focus on direction and delivery of programming activities. These priority audiences include: (1) agribusiness executives and management, with particular emphases on agricultural cooperative and agricultural manufacturing firms, and (2) public policy and economic development officials interested in agriculture-based industry development. I also interact with CCE executive directors and field educators by utilizing and collaborating with these personnel to better facilitate interaction and educational programming with the primary audiences of interest. A variety of communication methods are employed to effectively and strategically interact with program stakeholders, including program websites, list-serves, written communications (bulletins, fact sheets, and trade and industry publications), conferences, workshops, and other face-to-face meetings. More information on the Agribusiness and Economic Development Program is available at http://agribusiness.aem.cornell.edu.
