description
The Ph.D. program combines a focus on the substantive policy areas of health, consumer, and family/social welfare with graduate-level training in a theoretical or disciplinary area, analytical or empirical methods, and multiple disciplinary approaches. The Ph.D. degree is designed to prepare students for faculty positions in public policy, public health, and other academic positions. It also equips students with research and evaluation skills useful for careers in private consulting, government, or the non-profit sector.
Doctoral program.
Doctoral degree candidates in PAM must choose one of the Department's four areas of concentration as a major: (a) evaluation, (b) family/social welfare policy, (c) health management and policy, or (d) consumer policy. They are also required to choose two minor fields.
PAM doctoral students can elect a minor from any of PAM's four areas of concentration, or from another area outside the department. External minors usually represent disciplinary emphases such as psychology, sociology, or economics; but might also include such fields as statistics, development sociology, human development, labor economics, public economics, industrial organization, education, etc. Minor fields also frequently reflect students' prior work or academic experience.
Professional master's degree program.
The Master of Health Administration program (Sloan Program) is a prescribed two-year program designed to prepare individuals for administrative careers in health care settings such as hospitals, management consulting firms, private industry, government agencies, health care delivery systems, long-term care, and mental health and social welfare agencies. Students complete requirements in health services administration and selected electives in functional areas such as finance, marketing, information systems, and human resource management.
M.H.A./M.B.A. dual degree program
The Master in Health Administration/Master in Business Administration program is offered in conjunction with the Sloan Program in Health Administration and the Johnson Graduate School of Management. This dual degree provides students interested in health management and desiring in-depth training in the general field of business administration an opportunity to pursue both an M.H.A. and an M.B.A. simultaneously.
