research overview
- Our research is focussed on the assembly of mitochondria within eukaryotic cells. We seek to understand the mechanisms that govern mitochondrial gene expression and coordinate it with the assembly of respiratory complexes. Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is a very favorable organism for the study of these gene interactions, since mutations in both genetic systems can be isolated and manipulated. Furthermore, genetic transformation and homologous recombination allow the replacement of wild-type by mutant, or novel, DNA sequences in both the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes.

Teaching
teaching overview
- My primary teaching activity is lecturing in BioMG 2810 (2800), our introductory Genetics and Genomics course. This class is aimed at sophomores and juniors, but is also attended by many seniors. The course is taught on a problem solving basis and aims to teach how our understanding of inheritance and gene expression has been developed from a biological perspective. In 2010 I also particpated in BIOMG 7810, Problems in Genetics and Development for first year graduate students.
