research overview

  • My program in both Teaching and Research has exploited my varied background and experience in applying science to the understanding of the physiological constraints to animal production and broader areas - viz. animal biotechnologies and human reproductive mechanisms. In addition to a detailed analysis of the maturation of mammalian oocytes, recent work has been aimed at a description of the transcriptome of bovine oocytes at the germinal vesicle stage, the key starting material for many embryo biotechnologies. As I am winding down research activity, I was willing to take the lead, on behalf of the department during 2008, in establishing a repository of genomic DNA for the 1000+ cattle at the T&R Center. This material will provide a unique resource for later genotyping of animals for which we have an enormous production-performance database already in place and expected to continue indefinitely.
