Positions
My academic interests lie in floriculture, greenhouse cropping systems and the physiology of ornamental plants. My research and extension efforts in flower bulb forcing and use are substantially supported by the Dutch flower bulb export industry as well as US companies and Foundations. Findings from my research group have been adopted by many in the floriculture industry worldwide. I also provide leadership for the Seeley Conference, a major floral industry think tank held annually in Ithaca, and I teach courses in herbaceous plant materials and greenhouse management and crop production.

research overview
- The focus of my group is essentially in the areas of floricultural crop production and postharvest physiology, especially with flower bulbs. We are interested in growth control, ethylene effects on plants, interactions of specific plant pathogens (e.g., Fusarium oxysporum fs tulipae) and tulip bulbs in terms of ethylene evolution by the pathogen, carbohydrate metabolism in bulbous plants and physiological disorders (physiological diseases) in floricultural crops. We are also heavily involved in outdoor trialing and evaluation of annuals and perennials in Ithaca’s USDA Hardiness Zone 5 climate.

Teaching
teaching overview
- I am responsible for two formal courses, Hort 3000 (Annuals and Perennials, aka Herbaceous Plant Materials), and Hort 3100, Greenhouse Crop production and Marketing. Additionally, I usually direct several independent studies each semester. Hort 3000 (annuals and perennials) is taught each fall, and normally has 16-20+ students, but enrollment was down in 2008 and the course was not taught in 2009. We had ca. 14 students in 2010. This course is fundamental for those interested in floriculture and ornamental horticulture, as a major aspect of the course is learning the names and characteristics of some 300+ herbaceous plants (annuals, perennials, tropicals, etc). Extensive hands on experiences are provided at the lab site, Blue Grass Lane. Hort 3100 (greenhouse crop production and management) is an alternate-spring course (odd spring semesters) and is a key integrative course. Students are exposed to all aspects of plant growing in greenhouses, including consideration of the physical greenhouse environment and condition (structures, heating, cooling, ventilation), and crop responses to them (coverage of specific major floricultural crops, propagation, growth and development to flowering, etc). Alternate year course, odd springs. Appx. 23 students in 2009, and 25 are pre-registered for 2011.

Service
outreach overview
- I have a 15% extension appointment that is mainly to “cover” outreach activities associated with my research program. In extension, I am responsive to queries and provide information about my areas of expertise. For the 15% appointment, I do not have an official plan of work, but rather act in a supportive role, especially with the Greenhouse PWT, and our Cornell Greenhouse Advisory Board. I generally write 4-10 “extension or industry” articles per year, and normally give 5-10 formal presentations to industry or assigned stakeholder groups each year. My entire program generates many more presentations yearly, however, as some of my associates are taking on some speaking roles (mainly in-state). For example, of the 24 presentations made by my group in 2010, 17 were made by Melissa Kitchen.
