outreach overview
- My Extension program focuses on economic development, local government management and social service delivery (especially child care), and the role of planners in creating family friendly cities. My primary extension partners are 1) local governments – as represented in close collaborations with the International City County Management Association, the Reason Public Policy Institute, National League of Cities; 2) child care leaders – Child Care Bureau of the US Dept of Health and Human Services, Institute for Women’s Policy Research, Committee for Economic Development, and a host of state and local teams; 3) Economic development leaders – state and local chambers of commerce and economic development organizations, International City County Management Association and National League of Cities . In 2010 I received three grants totaling $140,000 for my work linking child care and economic development. I was keynote speaker at a National Symposium sponsored by the New America Foundation in Washington DC and another in Illinois on how to deal with the fiscal crisis. I led a team of students working with the APA to design a session for their national conference (New Orleans March 2010) and prepared a series of 3 issue briefs on ways in which planners can promote more family friendly cities by giving attention to multigenerational planning, child care and parks and recreation. I was invited keynote speaker at the Global Public Sector union conference in Geneva Switzerland in October 2010, and I advised the International City County Management Association and the National League of Cities on surveys of economic development activity of local governments. Currently I am preparing additional issue briefs for APA on economic development for distribution at a webinar I am organizing for thie Women and Planning Division of the APA in March 2011. I hosted a European study tour (March 2010) of US child care experts to explore alternative approaches to child care policy.
