research overview
- My research program is focussed on understanding the interactions between insect pests, their host plants and the stresses within agricultural ecosystems which affect pest and host plant fitness. I am also involved in developing practical pest and insecticide resistance management tactics which include an array of cultural, chemical and biological tools including insect-resistant varieties.

- Guest Lecture: ENTOM 4440/CSS 4440 (Integrated Pest Management); Plant & Animal Resistance in Pest Management (Oct 2009)
- IMPROVEMENTS For 2010: Insect Pest Management For Practitioners (ENTOM 2410) During 2009, over 350 new fact sheets were added to the pest management database for use in the laboratory portion of this course. These are mostly 2 page .pdf files (printed double-sided in color) and laminated for durability during hands-on lab exercises. They are used in conjunction with weekly PowerPoint presentations and displays of insect specimens (living and preserved) to demonstrate insect pest management principles and illustrate the diversity of pest and beneficial taxa covered in the course.
- Insect Pest Management For Practitioners (ENTOM 2410); Credit Hours: 3; Offered Spring Annually Purpose of Course: To provide students with an understanding of the biology and behavior of arthropods significant to agriculture and public health and of the currently recommended methods of managing populations of these species. Concepts and information of broad interest and application are emphasized. Target Student Audience: For non-entomology majors (undergraduate and graduate) who desire an introduction to the theory and practice of insect pest management but who probably have not had an introductory course in the science of entomology. • Material Covered: Lecture: Introduction to major pest species and tactics for their management. Discussions of insect pest management requirements on farms, gardens, forests, and urban environments, along with descriptions of control methods, materials, and equipment. Topics include: structure and function as needed for understanding the principles of identification of pest species and effects of management tactics; an overview of major themes in management (biological, cultural, genetic, insecticidal control, resistant hosts, and their integration in IPM); and management of some of the most important pest species to illustrate the application of these principles. Lab: Laboratory exercises are designed to reinforce the lectures by giving the students "hands-on" experience with the topics described above. The laboratory first explores the general features of insect external and internal morphology. In anticipation of the species to be described in lecture, the laboratory then introduces students to adults, immatures and representative damage of the major orders of pest and beneficial (predaceous and parasitic) insects, using examples from families and species described in lectures. The final five laboratories involve field trips and “on-hand” exercises in insect pest management.

outreach overview
- Development of Pest Taxa & Management Guidelines Database During 2009, numerous fact sheets were organized into a portable pest management database for use in on-site farm calls and pest diagnosis and consultation. These are mostly 2 page .pdf files (printed double-sided in color) and include numerous arthropod taxa, commodities and clientele groups. Multiple copies were made of those topics judged to be of greatest grower interest and were distributed as needed. The fact sheets dealing with organic methods of pest management were particularly helpful to Amish potato farmers who did not have internet access or availability of realtime information on the widespread potato late blight epidemic of 2009. The current directory of this hard copy fact sheet database is as follows: Arthropod Relatives of Insects Beneficial Species Fallacis - Mite Predator (Rincon-Vitova) Predatory Mites (Rincon-Vitova) Arthropod Relatives of Insects Agricultural Pests Common Grain Mite (Degesch) European Red Mite (CCE) European Red Mite (Midwest-IPM) Flour or Grain Mites (PSU) Garden Symphylan (R. - Statement of Extension Program Activities: My extension program activities involve training of pest management scouts, extension field staff and growers in insect identification, sampling and risk assessment in commercial potato production. I have also participated in on-farm demonstrations of insecticide resistance monitoring procedures and season-long demonstrations of novel non-insecticidal insect management tactics such as insect-resistant cultivars, propane flaming, trap crops, trench traps. Delivery methods I employ include traditional presentations (using video or electronic media) to grower groups, the agrichemical industry, and extension field staff; consultation on matters relating to use of insecticides and other insect management tactics; farm visits for diagnostic purposes; twilight on-farm workshops and annual revision of the potato insect management section published in “Cornell Guidelines for Commercial Vegetable and Potato Production”.
