Positions
I am an insect systematist that revises and describes carabid beetle taxa. The purpose of this endeavor is to charactreize biodiversity, and to identify natural areas of endemism that require conservation. I am curator of the Cornell University Insect Collection, and therefore responsible for its overall administration, its development, and enhancement. The CUIC is the largest at a land-grant institution, comprising over 7 million specimens representing insects from all biogeographic regions of the World.

research overview
- I am taxonomially revising the native predatory carabid beetles of the Society and Hawaiian Islands. The carabid fauna is quite rich; e.g. 96 species known from the 1045 square km island of Tahiti. This diversity is distributed such that closely related species are found in restricted geographic ranges on adjacent ridges. In addition, field work in which I participated, discovered 7 new native species on the island of Moorea, demonstrating that the Society Island fauna occurred on multiple islands just like the fauna in Hawaii. By producing taxonomic identification aids accessible to biologists, the immense biodiversity can be used to identify different areas of endemism, i.e., areas of unique biodiversity that merit conservation efforts.

outreach overview
- The results of my taxonomic research are immediately applicable to conservation planning in Hawaii. Species distributions of native insects are contributing criteria for location of nature reserves. I regularly correspond with State Officials in the Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Natural Area Reserve System, conveying my recent findings. In the past these have been incorporated into a Statewide Strategic Plan for native biodiversity. As functioning natural areas form the watersheds of Hawaii, all residents and visitors to the State benefit from this work. Establishment of a North Koolau Natural Area Reserve (http://hbs.bishopmuseum.org/pdf/NAR-oahu.pdf) will be one measure of success for this work. The Cornell University Insect Collection regularly runs tours for Cornell classes. As this is not in my teaching responsibilities, I consider it an outreach activity. I developed improved and more comprehensive educational materials for this year’s Department of Entomology Insectapalooza open house, as we reconfigured our exhibit space based on recent renovations. These renovated displays will form the core of a partially revolving set of displays that will be used in future open houses. The general public within driving distance of Cornell benefits from this outreach activity. The open house attendance has increased each year of its operation, and the insect collection is one of the major draws.
