Mary M. Kritz (Ph.D., sociology, University of Wisconsin, 2972) is a senior researcher at Cornell University. After an academic stint with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Purdue University, she worked as a Program Officer for the Rockefeller Foundation where she managed grant activities focused on demographic capacity in Latin America, Africa and Asia. She also developed and managed research programs on the status of women and fertility, U.S. immigration, and African population studies. After joining the faculty at Cornell University in 1990, she did survey research in Nigeria on women's status, fertility, and contraceptive use, and ethnicity. She has also done research on international and internal migration. Her research has focused on accounting for ethnic differentials in social demographic processes (fertility, contraceptive use, migration, etc.). Her current research focuses on why immigrant groups differ in their settlement and internal migration patterns in the USA; another project focuses on the links between international student mobility and higher education capacity in students' home countries. From 2002-2005, she served as Secretary-General and Treasurer of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP).

research overview
- My research focuses on international migration and development. I currently am working on 2 research topics. One focuses on the internal migration of U.S. foreign-born to non-traditional destinations in the United States and the other is a comparative country study of international student mobility and higher education. In 2007, I obtained Special Sworn Status (SSS) from the U.S. Census, which authorized me to carry out research on confidential census data files at the New York State Census Research Data Center (NYCRDC) based at CISER, Cornell University. For the initial stages of my research on foreign-born migration to new U.S. destinations, I and my collaborator (Doug Gurak) received a grant from the Russell Sage Foundation. In 2006, with support from the United Nations Population Division, I prepared a report on “The Transnationalization of Higher Education and International Student Mobility.” In 2007 I obtained a planning grant from the Sloan Foundation to extend my research on international student mobility by making an “Assessment of Data on Foreign Student Flows to the United States and Other Countries.” From 2002 through 2005, I served as Secretary-General and Treasurer of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP). During that period, I prepared several reports on population and development issues that were presented at United Nations meetings and available online. In 2005, I took the leadership in organizing the IUSSP XXV International Population Conference held in Turin France and attended by 2,500 population experts from 150 countries. In addition to preparing research articles for journal publication, I am working on a book-length monograph on immigrant group diversity in settlement and integration. I plan to continue my professional outreach efforts with United Nations, UNESCO and other international agencies.
