research overview
- My research and extension activities are targeted toward increasing the knowledge and adoption of IPM practices by citizens of New York State. Some aspects of my work are focused on the vegetable production industry; other aspects overlap into other production agriculture commodities and additional aspects extend beyond agriculture and into non-agricultural settings. Research Activities -Environmental Impact Quotient. Maintain, improve and update this index that compares pesticides for their environmental characteristics and allows pesticide users to choose those pesticides that pose the least risk. (also an extension activity) -Cover crops and soil health evaluation. Using a long term systems evaluation site with differing soil health starting points we will evaluated the effect of several cover crops (8) on increasing or decreasing soil health from the current status. This will result in a ranking of cover crops for use by farmers in attaining soil health. (also an extension activity)

outreach overview
- My research and extension activities are targeted toward increasing the knowledge and adoption of IPM practices by citizens of New York State. Some aspects of my work are focused on the vegetable production industry; other aspects overlap into other production agriculture commodities and additional aspects extend beyond agriculture and into non-agricultural settings. Extension Activities -Sustainability/IPM labeling of products in the marketplace. Working with farmers, supermarkets, processors, food service organizations and others in New York, the northeast, nationally and internationally to identify and document the practice of IPM on crops and communicate those IPM practices to consumers of the products. -Cornell guidelines for vegetables. Provide complete IPM information in a user-friendly format in hardcopy and over the internet for farmers, CCE staff, consultants, etc. -Network for Environmental Awareness. Collecting local, on-farm, weather information on the internet, using that information to operate pest forecast models, and providing easy access to the resulting forecasts and weather information over the internet for farmers, CCE staff, consultants, etc. -Potential Impact of Climate Change on Pests. Through participation in several grant funded projects with horticultural and meteorological colleagues at Cornell and other institutions, I have developed information that is useful in educating extension professionals, farmers, and policy makers about the potential impact of climate change on insect and disease occurrence on vegetable crops in the northeastern US.
