Teaching
teaching overview
- Adult education
- In all of my teaching my primary goal is to facilitate the development of critically reflective adult and extension education practitioners capable of wise and prudent professional practice. Such educators have to develop: • the technical skills to design, deliver, teach, and evaluate educational programs for adults; • the political strategies to understand and manage the power relations which profoundly affect their daily work; and • the ethical frameworks for judging the appropriateness of their professional actions. In my years of graduate teaching I have worked much more often with practitioners than those who aspire to research and teaching careers in higher education (although I would argue that these professional development goals are as appropriate for the profession of higher education researchers as they are for practicing adult and extension educators). My goal in facilitating the development of critically reflective practitioners is the improvement of practice. I have used this goal to direct my teaching since beginning my career in higher education as well as before in my adult and continuing professional work; I expect to continue developing it in the years to come.

outreach overview
- As with my graduate teaching and research goals, my primary extension and outreach goal is to facilitate the development of critically reflective adult and extension education practitioners capable of wise and prudent professional practice. Such educators have to develop: • the technical skills to design, deliver, teach, and evaluate educational programs for adults; • the political strategies to understand and manage the power relations which profoundly affect their daily work; and • the ethical frameworks for judging the appropriateness of their professional actions. As with my teaching and research goals, I attempt to embody the principle of “understanding and enabling practical educational action.”
