- Extension Associate, New York State Integrated Pest Management Program (NYS IPM)
I am the Eastern NYS IPM Area Educator for Field Crops and Livestock. I design IPM extension programs based on sound educational research. The process of need assessment, planning, curriculum development, implementation and measurable impacts are always part of my educational design. The educational focus is on-farm IPM education in small learning groups. This design has proven results and thus, has shown to increase participation and rates of adoption with the target audiences. The NYS IPM Field Crops Team has developed an extension program where small groups of field crop producers meet at each others farms on a regular basis over the course of a growing season. When you meet with producers on a regular basis in a training program they will retain more knowledge and are willing to use the IPM practices that are being taught. The original program is called Tactical Agriculture (TAg) which is an experiential, hands-on integrated pest and crop management educational program for field crop producers, and other agribusiness personnel in field corn and alfalfa. The TAg program teaches producers to better manage field crops, protect the environment, optimize net profitability, and reduce health risks. More recently we have developed new TAg programs like: Soybean, Wheat, Advanced Corn and Alfalfa, and Organic Field Crops TAg. Impacts of the program are measured through pre and post testing of IPM knowledge and an exit survey to determine the level of adoption of new practices. Producers greatly increase their knowledge and adopt about 90% of the new practices presented. We also prepare a report that is a compilation of pest data collected on a weekly basis from TAg participantsÕ fields. The NYS Field Crops Weekly Pest Report is to provide timely pest information to field crop extension educators. Extension educators statewide can glean the information needed to provide to their producersÕ current pest information.

outreach overview
- I provide leadership for field crop and livestock extension educators that serve on my Eastern NYS Field Crops and Livestock IPM Extension Advisory Committee. Much of my programming is based on their recommendations and is reflected in my educational efforts. One of the main goals for this coming year is to continue to promote the use of IPM on-farm educational programs. Currently, we have potentially 5 different TAg programs to offer to field crop producers: Traditional TAg (field corn and alfalfa), Wheat TAg, Soybean TAg, Advanced TAg, and Organic Field Crops TAg. In 2009 we are planning to have a Traditional TAg program in Lewis County. We have also applied for a grant to support Soybean TAg teams across NYS from the Northeast Soybean Board. In Eastern NYS we plan on a soybean TAg team in Jefferson County. If we receive the grant from the NE Soybean Board we also plan to have several one-time soybean IPM field meetings in several counties across NYS. I will also continue to build the on-farm livestock IPM educational program in E. NYS that I started for E. NYS in 2008. In cooperation with Keith Waldron I plan to continue the NYS IPM Field Crops Weekly Pest Report. This is a statewide extension publication that takes a lot of time and effort by all the writers involved in collecting current pest data each week and preparing it into small articles for extension educators and crop consultants to use with producers. We have lost several field crop extension educators over the last 9 years and several of these positions have not been replaced with new field crop agents in Eastern NYS. To address this issue I plan on working closely with local extension educators to provide an array of IPM educational opportunities for these counties. The development of a series of distance learning workshops is an option that I will be working on this coming year. With money left-over ($8,400) from the NE Tactical Agriculture Train the Trainer Program funded by Northeast SARE we have been given permission to develop a set of soybean IPM teaching modules. These will include: IPM for Foliar Diseases, IPM for Soybean Aphid, Weeds Management in Soybeans, IPM for Insect Pests of Soybeans, and Management of Soybean Rust.
