My program has the goal of developing improved management strategies for vegetable diseases by increasing our understanding of pathogen biology and host-pathogen interactions under field conditions. Basic research in understanding pathogen biology and plant-microbe interactions has made incredible gains in the past decade; however, few of these advances have been translated into improved control of vegetable diseases. We are combining both basic and applied research with novel extension strategies, to bridge the gap between the laboratory and the field and provide growers with novel management options.

outreach overview
- Vegetable production in New York had a farm gate value of about $450 million in 2007, and the state is now ranked fifth in the nation in the value of our fresh market industry. New York is fortunate to have a climate in which a great diversity of vegetables can be grown, and a knowledgeable and engaged group of growers. The goals of my extension program are two-fold. The first goal is to work with conventional, transitional and organic growers, seed companies, chemical companies and private consultants to improve vegetable disease management while promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The second goal is to develop and promote partnerships between Cornell University and elementary school educators and students to increase awareness of agriculture. The two goals are very integrated, as much of my elementary science outreach work is focused on vegetables and nutrition. As the percentage of the population that farms decreases, it is critical to educate the rest of the population about where our food is produced and of the value of agriculture. Within the first goal, I have three objectives; 1. Develop and implement improved control strategies for vegetable diseases, with special emphasis on bacterial and oomycete pathogens. 2. Enhance the capability of early, accurate and rapid detection of vegetable pathogens. 3. Provide disease control information to vegetable growers in New York and other areas of the northeast utilizing every available educational medium. Within the second goal, I have two objectives; 1. To nurture a passion for the plant sciences among a diverse population of elementary school students in the Geneva City School District. 2. Connect the outreach program to the 4-H club already functioning in the School District, and develop a website for ideas and teaching materials on the plant sciences that other school districts could access.
