Laurel Southard is the Director of Undergraduate Research for Cornell University. She strives to inspire students in all academic fields to consider undergraduate research as part of their Cornell education.
Responsible for direction of all undergraduate research activities and outreach programs in Undergraduate Biology. This includes the Cornell Hughes Scholars Program, The Cornell Presidential Scholars Program, The Honors Program in Biology, the Leadership Alliance Summer Program in Biology and the Cornell Institute for Biology Teachers. Responsible for management of budget for undergraduate research and outreach ($420,,000 per year). Oversee credit for undergraduate research in biology.
Serve as faculty advisor for all incoming freshmen Dean’s and Presidential Research Scholars in biology ( ~10 per year) along with an undergraduate student advisor.
Faculty advisor to ~10 upper-class students majoring in biology
Faculty advisor for Cornell Women in Science (WISC) and Cornell Phoenix Project
Advise students applying to graduate school
Liaison between 1400 biology majors who are interested in doing research and ~250 faculty whose research is biological in nature.
