The primary aim of this project is to prepare a reference manual that will serve as a conceptual and substantive template for the production of age-appropriate social studies texts for Eritrea`s schools. In addition, the project entails conducting workshops for teachers and members of the Social Science Curriculum Department in the Eritrean Ministry of Education.

I was invited to assist the Ministry of Education in Eritrea as it sought to revise its social science curriculum to meet the needs of a changing society in a period of accelerating globalization. The project is vital for Eritrea`s future and will shape the content of social studies education in Eritrea for the forseeable future.

Following several intensive workshops on what kind of social science education would be most appropriate, I have been conducting research and preparing a draft manual, which was submitted to the Ministry of Education in the summer of 2007. This was followed by workshops to discuss the reference manual and the revisions that might need to be made. A revised manuscript was submitted in January 2008, and a final workshop will be held in Asmara, Eritrea, in June 2008.

impact assessment

The project will have a considerable impact on the ability of Eritrea`s educators to adapt the national curriculum to better meet the social and economic challenges the country will face in the coming decades. It is part of a major push to expand the quality of education in Eritrea and is viewed by the government as the cornerstone of its development strategy.
