Tensions between Secularism and Religious Fundamentalism
2004 Impact statement- Feldman, Shelley
Abstract
An examination of the tensions that inhibit peace and economic security for pupoulations facing crises in the state management of political conflicts.
Issue
Understanding political tensions and generating new opportunities for negotiation are important for governments as they negotiate and manage intra and inter-state relations required for trade, migration, and world peace.
Response
I have thus far explored Bangladesh as a site where religious and secular tensions over governance preclude the sustainability of peace and economic security for its citizens. Also examined is the changing labor market and the rise of potential decline in the demand for women workers as garment manufacturing faces changes in the Multi-fiber Agreement which promises to alter the U.S. demand for Bangladeshi manufactured goods.
