Rudstam, Lars Gosta

Professor
My research, teaching and extension activities are in the fields of aquatic ecology and fisheries. My research span topics from submerged aquatic vegetation, hydrodynamics models, invertebrate and zooplankton ecology, fish ecology, fish eating birds, and anglers. I teach a course in fish ecology, and seminars on selected topics. I also consult with managers, mostly in New York and Canada as part of technical committees.

research

research and scholarship focus

I consider my research to be at the interface between basic and applied science with a focus on aquatic ecosystems and fisheries.I am espcially interested in food web dynamics and the interactions between fisheries management and ecosystem processes. This include processes at different spatial and temporal scales.

teaching

teaching focus

I teach part of one course each spring: Fish Ecology, Conservation and Management with Mills and Jackson. I also advice graduate student and organize seminars as needed. Hands-on experience is important. Our summer program at CBFS includes undergraduate interns who get a research experience at the the field station in the summer and opportunity to present their research in a symposium and a paper through independent study credits in the fall. I typically advice 3 to 5 such students each summer-fall.

service

outreach focus

My extension activities are mostly related to advising DEC fisheries managers and continuing education of professionals through workshops etc. I lead a study group on hydroacoustic in the Great Lakes. I also work with Ed Mills on an education initiative for area schools.
