Lee, David R

Professor
My research program focuses on two primary areas: agricultural and natural resource management policy at national and international levels, and changes in microeconomic, farm and household behavior. Specific research interests include agricultural and rural economic policy, the economics of technology adoption, sustainable agriculture, natural resource management, and rural poverty. My research focuses primarily on Latin America and the U.S. Recent publications include a co-edited volume, the Handbook on Environment and Society, published by Sage, and numerous journal articles and book chapters on agriculture-environment interactions and tradeoffs, technology adoption, and watershed management. I have also recently contributed to several major international projects including a World Bank study of deforestation and biodiversity conservation in Peru, and a global study of rural poverty for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO). My teaching responsibilities include a large undergraduate course in “International Trade and Finance” that draws students from across the campus, and an interdisciplinary graduate course on “Agroecosystems, Economic Development and the Environment.” Administrative tasks include a recently completed six-year term as Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Applied Economics and Management, and Director of Cornell`s Program in International Relations, an undergraduate concentration administered by the Einaudi Center for International Studies and serving about 200 undergraduates from across the campus. Campus activities include recently completed service on the University Faculty Senate`s Ad Hoc Committee on Faculty Governance, the CALS Dean`s Financial Advisory Committee, and the CALS Plant Sciences Task Force. Off-campus, I served a three-year elected term as a member of the Board of Education of the Ithaca City School District (2004-2007), including serving as Board President during 2006-2007.
