Marino, Roxanne M

Senior Research Associate
I have a research appointment as a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I am a biogeochemist interested in major nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) and trace element biogeochemistry in ecosystems, particularly coastal marine ecosystems and rivers and their watersheds. In particular, I am interested in understanding the controls on biological nitrogen fixation and other nitrogen cycling processes in the context of human perturbations of the environment. I am also interested in public outreach on science issues, and policy to address ecological problems, and strive to apply research results to these areas.

research and scholarship focus

My research is focused on understanding the controls on biogeochemical processes that are key in the cycling of major nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in a variety of ecosystems, and on the effects of human perturbations on nutrient cycles and eutrophication. My research is highly collaborative with groups both on campus and at other institutions, and often incorporates a cross-system comparative approach to understanding mechanism and effect. An emphasis is placed on applying research results to develop practical and sustainable approaches to management of nutrient pollution.
